Aston Martin’s leadership situation has been called into question by former F1 TV presenter Will Buxton, who expressed concern about the frequent changes within the team. Andy Cowell joined the team as Group CEO in 2024, then took on the role of team principal in January 2025 following Mike Krack’s departure. However, Cowell’s tenure was short-lived, as Adrian Newey, the managing technical partner, assumed the team principal responsibilities in 2026.
Presently, Cowell now serves as the chief strategy officer, while Krack holds the position of chief trackside officer. Despite facing challenges in the 2026 season, there are speculations that Lawrence Stroll might bring in a new team principal so Newey can focus on his existing duties. Although Aston Martin has refuted these rumors for now, Buxton likened the team’s situation to that of a football club purchased by a wealthy individual who makes frequent managerial changes.
In the Up To Speed podcast, Buxton expressed his belief that the constant changes within the team are detrimental to its overall culture and long-term direction. He emphasized the importance of consistency in the face of challenges, noting that achieving success in Formula 1 requires time and a clear vision. According to Buxton, the frequent changes at Aston Martin could hinder their progress and prevent them from achieving their goals effectively.
In addition to this, Lawrence Stroll’s eagerness for immediate results could be contributing to the cycle of changes within the team, as he strives to position Aston Martin as a competitive force in the sport. However, Buxton highlighted the need for patience and strategic planning in order to steer the team in the right direction and foster a culture of stability and success. Ultimately, the key to overcoming challenges lies in maintaining a consistent vision and approach, rather than constantly changing course.
