Fernando Alonso, a two-time Formula 1 champion, recently provided an update on his future in the series, expressing his continued motivation and desire for this not to be his final season. At 44 years old, Alonso holds the title of the oldest driver on the current grid, with a rich history of driving for various teams including Minardi, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, and now Aston Martin since 2023. Despite Aston Martin facing challenges in the 2026 season, Alonso remains committed, stating that he will know when it’s time to retire but still deeply enjoys what he does.
In a recent interview during the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco, Alonso expressed his love for racing, highlighting that he has been behind a steering wheel for 41 years since his first race at the age of three. While acknowledging that the decision to stop racing will be difficult, Alonso emphasized that he still feels competitive, motivated, and happy when he’s on the track, indicating that he hopes this won’t be his final season as a Formula 1 driver.
Currently, Alonso and his teammate Lance Stroll are struggling in the drivers’ standings due to issues with Aston Martin’s 2026 challenger and Honda power unit, placing 21st and 22nd, respectively. Following a break in the season, the F1 paddock is preparing for the Miami Grand Prix at Hard Rock Stadium from 1 to 3 May. As the season progresses, Alonso’s future in the series remains a topic of interest, with fans eager to see how his journey with Aston Martin unfolds.
